The RumXP Tasting Competition
The 2011 RumXP International Tasting Competition was held at the Deauville Beach Resort on Miami Beach April 27-29 as part of the Miami Rum Renaissance Festival. The International Rum Expert Panel Tasting Competition

More than 20 members of the International Rum Expert Panel participated and more than 80 of the finest rums in the world were presented for evaluation.

The RumXPs were sequestered in their tasting room for three days of blind tasting trials. The rums were grouped and judged in categories of white, gold, aged, old aged, premium aged, dark, spiced, flavored and overproof.

Their collective expertise as a group of judges is unrivaled in the spirits world. Their combined experience spans many dozens of countries and hundreds of brands. They are authors, lecturers, trainers, historians, journalists, consultants, collectors, proprietors, mixologists and promoters of rum.

Congratulations to all the fine rum brands and their outstanding spirits.

The Zombie Jam Cocktail Competition sponsored by DonQ
Some of the world's best bartenders and mixologists in the United States have challenged their peers to a Zombie Cocktail Championship at the Mai Kai on Monday, April 25 from 5 to 7pm at the Mai Kai Restaurant in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Bermuda Triangle Competition - VIP Party at Deauville sponsored by Rum Renaissance, Barritt's Ginger Beer and Fee Brothers
More of the world's best bartenders and mixologists, many from the Miami Chapter of the USBG, came together for a challenge on Tuesday, April 26 at the VIP Party hosted by the Deauville Beach Resort Pool. This competition required contestants create a drink made with Barritt's Ginger Beer, one or more ingredients from Fee Brothers and anything else they wanted to add to the mix. Freddy Diaz of AlambiQ won the Bermuda Triangle Competition with "Son of a Beach" using Dos Maderas PX 5+5 aged rum.

Freddy Diaz's Version of the Bermuda Triangle Cocktail:

1 oz. Barritt’s Ginger Beer
1 1/2 oz. Dos Maderas 5+3
1/2 oz. Dos Maderas PX
1 oz. Donn’s Mix #1 (2:1)
(2 Parts Fresh Squeezed Grapefruit, 1 Part Cinnamon Syrup)
1/2 oz. Boiron Lime Juice
1/2 oz. Simple Syrup
1/16 oz. (Small Dash) Fee Brothers Grapefruit Bitters
Garnish with a Thin Slice of Florida Grapefruit rolled and a cinnamon stick
TIED TOGETHER with a channel knifed cucumber string.

Donn’s Mix #1:
2 Parts Fresh Squeezed Grapefruit, 1 Part Fee Brothers Cinnamon Syrup

Technique:
In a mixing Glass, add Ingredients.
Shake with Ice.
Strain Over Fresh Crushed Ice in a Tall Zombie.
Top with Barritt’s Ginger Beer and blend Ingredients together with a Bar Spoon.
Garnish.


Baritt's Ginger Beer Bermuda Getaway Recipe Contest sponsored by Barritt's
Great mixologists know that Barritt's Ginger Beer is the secret ingredient that makes good cocktail great. Now Barritt's is running a contest for their aclaimed Ginger Beer called "Barritt's Bermuda Getaway."

The contest is simple: the person who comes up with the best cocktail featuring Barrritt's Ginger Beer wins a free trip to Bermuda for two. There are two categories: Consumer and Retailer.

Barritt's is offering separate trips for the retailer and the consumer for the best cocktail. The contest ran from February until April 17. The winners were anounced at Miami Rum Renaissance Festival.

The Barritt's Bermuda Get Away Recipe Contest Consumer Winner is Matt Konrad of Minneapolis. His winning cocktail is "Here Comes The Boom."

ingredients

  • .75 oz fresh lime juice
    .5 oz orange curacao
    .75 oz falernum
    1 oz navy rum
    1 oz gold rum
    1.5 oz grapefruit juice
    2.5 oz Barritt's Ginger Beer

instructions: Shake all ingredients except ginger beer in a shaker with ice. Pour unstrained into a highball or double old-fashioned glass. Top with Barritt's Ginger Beer.

The Barritt's Bermuda Get Away Recipe Contest Retail Winner is Alexei Beratis, the beverage manager at Towne and Stove Spirits in Boston. His drink is the "Bella Dona."

  • 1.5 oz dark rum
    .5 oz amaretto
    .5 oz orange juice
    1 orange twist
    1 oz Barritt's Ginger Beer

instructions: add dark rum, amaretto and orange juice to an ice filled shaker glass. cover and shake until well chilled. strain into chilled cocktail glass. Top with Barritt's ginger beer garnish with an orange twist and serve in an 8 oz cocktail (martini) glass.


The winners from the 2010 Barritt's competition were:

Consumer Winner: Lawrence Spies from Texas. The drink is the "Storm Warning." The drink is 3-4 oz Barritt's Ginger Beer, 2 oz. Gosling's Black Seal Rum, 2 oz. Domaine du Canton with a garnish of a lime or lemon wedge. Instructions: fill tall glass with ice and add 2 oz. Golsing's, 2 oz. Domaine du Canton, and top with Barritt's Ginger Beer. Serve in highball glass.

Retailer Winner: Sam McDaniel from Illinois. He is the Beverage Specialist at the Whole Foods Market in Lincoln Park, IL. The drink is the "Sake Blossom." It calls for 2 oz. of Barritt's Ginger Beer, 1 oz Clement Creole Shrubb Clementine Orange Liqueur, 1 oz sparkling cava, 1 oz. junmai gingo sake, .5 oz lemongrass simple syrup, 1 strawberry diced, 1 orange blossom (garnish). Instructions: muddle diced strawberry, lemongrass simple syrup and sake in a shaker. Strain into champagne flute. Add Barritt's, Cava and Clement Creole Shrubb Clementine Orange Liqueur slowly to the champagne flute. Serve in champagne flute.


Bamboo Bartender Cocktail Competition - The Iron Mixologist
The Bamboo Bartender Competition is a test of bartending skills and creativity while thinking on one's feet.

Competitors will be provided with an array of potential cocktail ingredients and bar tools and asked to create an original cocktail highlighting a specific featured ingredient (or ingredients). The competition is limited to a maximum of 18 contestants who will compete in groups of 3 with the winner of each heat advancing, tournament style.

The competition takes place during the Grand Tasting on April 30 and May 1 in the Island Lifestyle Showcase theatre. Cocktails will be judged on taste, creativity, presentation, and use of the featured ingredient(s) for the round. The winner will be crowned Bamboo Bartender 2011.

Tiki Face Off Competition - US versus UK

US Team (above) makes an incredible effort their kiddie pool Tiki drink, but the UK Tiki Team (below) takes home the trophy once again in 2011 for their skit featuring the "Royal Wedding" of Princess Tiki and Trader Vic, or was it Don the Beachcomber?
